The interesting part is some of the rivalries between the clubs in their respective leagues. The place, the preparation, the crowd, the history, the results and everything little things matter in these games, but it is realized that more often than not, it’s not so much the place that makes the game great but the teams on the field, And sometimes, it’s the crowd that make the experience truly passionate and memorable. They actually represent the historic political, religious and social divide between Catholics and Protestants, and between Nationalists and Unionists. Celtic has Republican and Nationalist supporters and are considered a Catholic club and Rangers has Unionist and loyalist supporters and are considered as Protestant club. So any clash between the two teams is not just a game of soccer, it mean allot to their fan because of political and religious background of their fans. 2- Liverpool vs. Manchester United – England

This clash tells us that not all the rivalries are derbies as these two teams are 30 miles away from each other representing different cities. Both clubs have the big fan following in the world, which make this encounter more intense. Many consider it as the biggest game of the season as well as the biggest rivalry in the world. The two clubs have developed a vicious hatred of each other, fuelled by incidents of hooliganism in the 1980s and 1990s. This is also an example of rivalry between the clubs representing different cities and still having the great intensity. Both the clubs are two of the most winning clubs of Spain but beyond the, the two different cities from which these two club belong represents two rival regions. Madrid is known as the representative of the nation because of the place of Spanish Royal Family whereas Barcelona is located in Catlonia which has its own traditional identity and language. This difference is so much intense that there was a movement in spain for Catalonia to be an independent country. And that’s why the fixture is watched by many people equivalent to this regional rivalry.

    The Man U – Liverpool game has probably the best quality of football but there is no way that it is more intense than the Old Firm or Boca – River Plate. It’s not even a derby match. Great article though!

    I think that the real rivarly in italian soccer is the one between F.C. Inter Milan and F.C. Juventus… Both for players and for supporters… :)
